Oily slops and sludges treatment

Specialist services for the treatment of oily slops and sludges

As a result of evolving environmental legislation and operator corporate policies, TWMA has developed an efficient and effective process for treating oily slop and sludge wastes.

These wastes, produced in huge volumes by the oil and gas industry, are treated by one of our slops and sludges treatment plants before they are disposed of in accordance with environmental legislation.

We incorporate special design features in the process, which includes heat and mechanical treatment along with the use of proprietary knowledge and an understanding of the complex chemistry involved.

Our slops and sludges treatment process produces three distinct components of recovered oil, recovered water and solids discharge.

Oil
The oil recovered during treatment can be recycled back into the drilling mud system as industrial fuel.  The oil remains unaffected in quality because the process we use has no high temperatures.

Water
The recovered water can be discharged or used as industrial water if required.

Solids discharge
Subject to client and regulatory requirements, the solids phase be further treated via  thermal desorption or solidification, or sent to landfill.

Analytical requirements for treatment
The treatment process requires the following tests to be carried out and reported:

  • Incoming slops and sludges are retorted for percentage content of oil, water and solids
  • Produced solids discharge is analysed for oil and water content
  • Recovered oil is tested for contamination
  • Processed waters are typically analysed for pH, COD, TOC, suspended solids and hydrocarbon content
