Drilling waste and its management is an increasingly important part of any drilling operation, whether it be on land or offshore. These wastes, which typically include drilling fluids, cuttings and well bore clean-up fluids require some form of treatment prior to disposal or recycling as regulatory bodies and oil companies apply higher environmental standards.
Most wells will generate most if not all of these waste streams in varying quantities. Drill cuttings may be contaminated in either water (WBM) or oil based mud (OBM) and while it has become accepted practice to treat those OBM cuttings the treatment of WBM cuttings is becoming increasingly common in more sensitive environments. Well bore clean-up fluids are typically hydrocarbon contaminated and will also require the filtering of contaminants prior to disposal or reuse.
